Court-Appointed Attorneys in Oregon
What It Is: Free legal representation for criminal cases if you cannot afford a private attorney as established by the Sixth Amendment and reinforced by the U.S. Supreme Court in Gideon v. Wainwright.
Eligibility:
- Must prove financial hardship
- $20 application fee
- May need to contribute based on finances
Available For:
- Criminal cases (misdemeanors and felonies)
- Juvenile proceedings

How to Apply:
- If not in custody: Visit Indigent Defense window Location: Justice Center, 3rd floor 1120 SW 3rd Ave, Portland, OR 97204
- If in custody: Attorney generally assigned at first court appearance unless there are no attorneys available. If that is the case, the person will be either released or held for an additional hearing regarding release.
